Silphion, known to the Romans by its Latin term laserpitium, was a much sought-after spice and panacea in antiquity. Not only was it considered to be extremely tasty and fragrant, but also had a strong laxative effect and was taken as a supposed remedy for all kinds of ailments as well as for contraception. Emperor Nero is said to have received one of the last stalks as a gift. Although silphion has probably been extinct since the 1st century AD, the plant can still be admired on ancient coins and pottery.

This museum offers a singular exhibition of coins, medals, paper money and tokens of all times, from antiquity (Greek, Celtic, Roman) to the Middle Ages and to modern times. Money rules the world, this important aspect is emphasized by the permanent as well as by special exhibitions. The museum holds about 300 000 objects, being one of the largest collections specializing on monetary history.
