Leaves and flowers entwine capitals and columns, figures of Mary sit in flowering gardens, columns of cathedrals resemble avenues of trees... Inspired by rediscovered texts from antiquity and the teachings of the scholastics, Gothic artists began to recognize nature as God's creation and to illustrate this concept in their paintings and buildings. With their works filled with life, they prepared the way to modern times and to scientific research.
