As part of the exhibition "Zhanna Kadyrova. Out of Home" ukrainian historian Maryna Dubyk addresses the effects of war and occupation on the people in Ukraine. At the center of the exhibition is the work "Refugees" (2022) by Zhanna Kadyrova: Haunting interior shots document the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine by Russian missiles. Among shattered furniture, tattered curtains, and sooty debris, only houseplants remain as remnants of former life.
Millions of Ukrainians live under Russian occupation today. What impact does this have on their lives? Maryna Dubyk will shed light on Russia's occupation policy, which includes not only military force but also targeted terror against the civilian population. In her lecture, Dubyk also addresses the historical experience of the German occupation during World War II. This will be followed by a discussion with Eastern European scholar Kristina Tolok.
Maryna Dubyk is a historian and was for a long time an employee of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. She has been researching the German occupation of Ukraine during World War II for over 20 years.
