Landscape painting developed in Europe from a scenery element in the Middle Ages to an independent pictorial theme in the Renaissance and Baroque. New impulses were given in the 19th century by the paintings of the Romantic C. D. Friedrich or the Impressionists such as Claude Monet. Likewise, the treatment of light changed from a scenic lighting factor to a carrier of symbolic meanings and atmospheric moods. Art historian Dr Angela Opel explains these groundbreaking innovations in front of selected originals.
