The naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) earned a reputation unusual for a woman of her time with her research on insects and flowers. Thanks to her artistic talent, she created monuments to animals and plants in drawings and copperplate engravings that still enjoy great popularity today on postcards, prints and other objects. Merian's portrait adorned the 500 DM note and in 1987 a German postage stamp. The lecture sheds light on Merian's life and work.
