On September 7, the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism invites you to the opening of the installation "Zhanna Kadyrova. Out of Home."
From September 8 to October 8, 2023, the center will host an installation of recent works by artist Zhanna Kadyrova, created in direct response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. They are an expression of civil resistance and artistic counter-resistance in the face of military violence. At the center of the exhibition is the work "Refugees" (2022): Haunting interior shots document the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine by Russian missiles. Among shattered furniture, tattered curtains, and sooty debris, only houseplants remain as remnants of former life. These damaged organisms were salvaged by the artist; in the exhibition space they now find temporary refuge together with the photographs. As silent survivors, they bear witness to the war crimes committed against the Ukrainian civilian population since February 2022.
Following a welcoming address by City Councilor Florian Roth, curator Anke Hoffsten (Munich Documentation Center Munich) and art historian Christoph Platz-Gallus (Director Kunstverein Hannover) will provide insight into the exhibition and Zhanna Kadyrova's body of work.
