Anna is obsessed with medicinal herbs and lives in her late grandmother’s old house in a small town in Bohemia. She is surrounded by the sights and fragrance of the natural world in bloom, but all she can think of is collecting, drying and above all selling medicinal plants. Neither her failed marriage nor severe illness can mellow this obsession. And then there is her former father-in-law who has suddenly turned up dead and who knows what has become of Anna’s large secateurs…

Anna Bolová (* 1981) is from Southern Bohemia and studied Czech literature at Charles University in Prague. Her debut novel “Do tmy” was awarded the prestigious Czech literary prize Magnesia Litera in 2016 and was published in German by Mitteldeutscher Verlag as “Der Duft der Dunkelheit” (trans. Katharina Hinderer) in 2022.

The reading will take place at the 300-year-old Kriechbaumhof in Haidhausen. Herbs will be scattered about the room so that it smells just like protagonist Anna’s home when she dries her herbs in the book. After the reading, attendees will have the opportunity to chat with the author over a glass of homemade lemonade.
