The exhibition "Freilegungen" by Joseph Stephan Wurmer shows his latest abstract wood sculptures from the series of works "Ordnung und Chaos", "Lichter Raum" and "Aus meinem archäologischen Tagebuch".
"The reference to nature is very important to me, it is given by the material alone." The fact that Stephan Wurmer, despite his abstract formal language, does not push the alienation of the material so far that nothing more than the mere form remains of the wood is related to this attitude. The material does not serve him merely to find form, but rather material and form set limits to each other on an equal footing and behave in partnership. Wurmer's form-giving cuts with the chain saw move within this arc of tension. He describes his intention by saying that he "wants to make from the stimuli from nature what does not exist in nature, and wants to open up new possibilities, new realities with the characteristic properties of the material." This freedom of invention is immensely satisfying and stimulates him to ever new designs.
