Following the slogan "Love, Peace, Freedom" the youth counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s set out to change society. Lifestyle and dress habits were one aspect of this revolt and shaped the iconic image of the hippie, swaying to psychedelic beats and floral patterns. In the postwar decades, this movement actually finds its starting point in the United States, but the historical origins of the alternative movement lie in the heart of Europe. From Munich's "Kohlrabi Apostle" Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach to the reformist settlement community on Monte Verità to the Wandervögel forming further north and the youth alliances overshadowed by Nazi ideology – the "Bürgerschreck" with its flower-wreathed hair and Jesus slippers springs from the historical mood of upheaval arising around 1900.
