The Alte Südliche Friedhof (Old South Cemetery) is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the city. Important personalities who rendered outstanding services to the green development of the city found their final resting place here. They include Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, Carl von Effner, Franz von Schrank and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, to name but a few. In the meantime, the cemetery has been abandoned and has become an inner-city green space.
The southern cemetery is a wonderful example of cemetery culture. The guided tour sheds light on its origins and development from a plague cemetery to a celebrity cemetery and finally to a green oasis. The "green biographies" of the personalities buried here will bring to life Munich's importance for botany and urban planning in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The tour also takes place in case of rain.
