Silphion, known to the Romans by its Latin term laserpitium, was a much sought-after spice and panacea in antiquity. Not only was it considered to be extremely tasty and fragrant, but also had a strong laxative effect and was taken as a supposed remedy for all kinds of ailments as well as for contraception. Emperor Nero is said to have received one of the last stalks as a gift. Although silphion has probably been extinct since the 1st century AD, the plant can still be admired on ancient coins and pottery.
